A Rhythmic Reverie: Pung Cholom at Salwan
On a crisp winter morning of 28 January 2026, the Block C Auditorium of Salwan Public School transformed into a vibrant window to the distant and culturally rich state of Manipur. In collaboration with SPIC MACAY (Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth), the school hosted a captivating performance of Pung Cholom, a traditional art form of Manipur, presented by the renowned exponent Shri Khumukcham Romendro Singh Ji, accompanied by a highly skilled troupe of artistes.
The programme offered an insight into the grandeur of Pung Cholom, a seventeenth century Manipuri Sankirtana tradition recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The performance held the audience spellbound through a compelling symphony of movement and sound. The presentation reflected a powerful synthesis of rhythmic precision, remarkable agility, and deep devotional expression. Adorned in majestic traditional attire, the dancers spun, leapt, and drummed in seamless harmony, narrating themes of divine love and valour through movement and rhythm.
Following the performance, an interactive session provided students with a rare opportunity for direct engagement with the maestro. Shri Khumukcham Romendro Singh Ji shared valuable insights into the rigorous discipline, years of dedicated practice, and spiritual journey intrinsic to the art of Pung Cholom. Emphasis was placed on the understanding of Pung Cholom not merely as a performance tradition but as a form of worship and a way of life, deeply rooted in the cultural fabric of Manipur.
The morning emerged as a deeply enriching and inspiring experience, offering students meaningful exposure to the living traditions of India’s cultural legacy beyond the written word. The programme stood as a reminder of the responsibility to preserve, promote, and celebrate traditional arts so that cultural wisdom continues to inspire future generations.
The event reached a formal culmination with the felicitation of the esteemed artistes and the dedicated SPIC MACAY coordinators by the school Principal. The vote of thanks underscored the enduring value of such cultural engagements and reaffirmed the school’s commitment to holistic education grounded in India’s diverse artistic heritage.
