Justice Sanjay Karol, brings nearly four decades of distinguished experience in the legal and judicial fields. He served as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India from 2023 to 2026, where he adjudicated and authored judgements across constitutional law, criminal appeals, motor-vehicle accident compensation, service matters, arbitration, legal aid and commercial disputes. During his tenure, he was appointed Chairperson of a Search-cum-Selection Committee constituted by the Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India, Justice Karol has served on the Academic Councils of the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru, and National Law University, Odisha. Prior to his elevation to the Supreme Court, Justice Karol served as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court from 2019 to 2023 and Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court from 2018 to 2019. Justice Karol began his judicial career as a Judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court in 2007 and also served as its Acting Chief Justice from 2017 to 2018. Earlier, he was designated Senior Advocate of the Himachal Pradesh High Court and served as Advocate General of Himachal Pradesh, representing the State before courts and judicial fora across the country. An alumnus of St. Edward’s School, Shimla, he holds a B.A. (Honours) in History and an LL.B. from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla.
